The three most common dates are Expiration Date, Sell-By Date, and Use-By Date. But what do they mean and how accurate are they?
1) Expiry dates are just that:
Food is not considered to be safe for consumption past that date.
2) Sell by date:
The manufacturer has deemed the food to be fresh up until that date.
3) Use by date:
Up until that date, food should be just fine, but may not be as fresh.
4) Many foods are still edible after “Good until date”. See below for some guidance.
Disclaimer: These are general guidelines and not to be fully trusted. There are many things that can alter these “safe” dates, such as temperature control and other environmental factors during processing, shipping, and storage. Please use caution.
